What does it do? +The Voyageur Onboard 3055 is an on board validator that enables passengers to validate their current trips on the bus, with no need to interact with the driver or conductor, or any staff on the vehicle. The Voyageur Onboard 3055 is designed for processing contactless smart travel cards on public transport ticketing systems on board the vehicle. It is able to process all smart card actions, such as entry control and full check in and check out capabilities.
Where is it used? +The Voyageur Onboard 3055 is used on buses, trams and light rail vehicles.
How does it work? +The process for the passenger is simple and seamless. The Voyageur Onboard 3055 is placed on the vehicle, usually at several strategic locations. The traveler approaches the machine and simply places it near the contactless reader for validation.
The Voyageur Onboard 3055 quickly reads the card, calculates the required travel points needed for the current trip, and informs the passenger through sound and through the information on the screen if the validation was successful or not. The Voyageur Onboard 3055 also deducts the correct relevant fare, usually as number of rides, from the stored rides on the card. In cases of time-based travel smart cards, the Voyageur Onboard 3055 records the travel without deducting any travel points, or rides.
The passenger is immediately informed on the color display how much credit, be it in terms of time or travel points, is left on her travel card. In the case that the card is not valid, for whatever reason, the passenger is informed by sound and on screen text that indicates non-validation. There is also an optional printer that is capable of printing a receipt for the passenger.
The Voyageur Onboard 3055 has internal communication capabilities with the Ticket Machine (Driver's Console). Alternatively, the Voyageur Onboard 3055 can act as an 'on board network', with one of the machines equipped with an optional GPS and communicating with the back office. Passenger validations or failures are reported in real time. Like all of Transway's validators, the Voyageur Onboard 3055 communicates with the back office in order to report information, as well as receive information such as updated lists of invalid cards, tariff and price changes, as well as route updates. This can be done though the cellular communications or the Data Communication Unit (DCU).
What are its characteristics? +The machine is sturdy, strong, compact and flexible. It can be placed in numerous places on the bus to allow for easy access for both check in and check out validation. The rugged and durable material is also protected against vandalism. The product contains protected panel connections and shielded metal fixtures designed to prevent unauthorized detachment and removal.
Transway's Voyageur Onboard 3055 offers a choice of two (2) graphic interfaces. The informative screen can be programmed in five languages. It is easily installed onto the pole(s) of the bus, and is firmly stable in that position.
The Voyageur Onboard 3055 is flexible. It can deal with multiple transit companies, different tariff structures, such as flat rate, zone based, time based and distance based, as well as with multiple contracts, or travel packages, on a single card. It is part of a larger and comprehensive public transport ticketing system
The contactless card reader of the Voyageur Onboard 3055 is flexible and gives the transit authority freedom to choose to work with one or multiple suppliers of smart cards. The system supports ISO-14443 A/B, NFS, Calypso ®, Mifare Ultra Lite ®, and DESFire®
The Voyageur Onboard 3055 is connected to the TapNGo back office through cellular communications. Data is stored on the devices internal memory, acting as a backup for the data that is sent back to the Cashier Station. The Data Communications Unit (DCU) acts as an additional backup of the data. The communication with the back office system is bidirectional, which means that the Voyageur Onboard 3055 receives information on new routes, updated fare rates, software updates, lists of rejected cards and more.
Like all Transway Validators, the Voyageur Onboard 3055 is especially quick, with a maximum time of half a second to complete a transaction. This is great news for your passengers as well! There is both quick visual and audio indication provided for success or failure of the validation attempt. There are numerous lighting options in order to visually indicate different situations or messages to the passenger, while the 1W speaker means that the sounds are easily heard by the passenger.
The flexibility of the Voyageur Onboard 3055 is manifest in its modular architecture, which means that it is easier and quicker to deal with maintenance issues, as well as to modify the product software of hardware to the customer's needs. The project architecture for the Onboard 3055 is also flexible in that they can form an "on-board network" with one either with or without a Ticket Machine (Driver's Console).
The Voyageur Onboard 3055 is secure. This is evident through the numerous security standards that are supported, such as PKI/AES256/3DES/DESx based on unique hardware or SAM security.
The machine can be installed at different heights on the pole, and as such is designed for easy access by wheelchair bound passengers.

How is it unique? +The Voyageur Onboard 3055 can be used either in concert with a Ticket Machine (Driver's Console) or as a standalone solution. There is no need for a Ticket Machine for communicating to the back office. The Voyageur Onboard 3055 can be equipped with an optional GPS receiver, which allows it to serve as a means of communicating to the back office in real time.
There is also flexibility in terms of the timing of updates, as well as the content and types of updates requested. The Voyageur Onboard 3055, equipped with the optional GPS receiver, can transmit and receive updates at regular intervals or by initiating a specific request. This includes monitoring of machine by the back office in order to locate potential problems with the machine, providing travel information to the back office, such as geographical coordinates, travel direction, and speed of the vehicle, or synchronization of the GPS clock.
The Voyageur Onboard 3055 has an internal memory card (Micro SD), a Data Communications Unit (DCU) and NAND Flash. Furthermore, it can communication through cellular communications. This means triple redundancy and freedom of choice as to how the transit authority decides to receive the data from its fleet, including RS485, local RF or BT. An internal UPS allows for continued usage of 40 minutes during a sudden power outage.
The flexibility and freedom extends to the user interface terminology files, where updates and changes from the database can be managed and executed in-house, or by a third party integrator, with no need to involve Transway's development team.
Passengers are able to execute simple and automatic validation, as well as more complex and complicated activities, such as validating two or more people or choosing between different and conflicting travel plans or contracts.
The Android Operating System means that any additional development can be done locally and by a third party Integrator. There is no closed or proprietary SDK involved, but rather an open Android system. Apps can be easily incorporated into the project, such as maps or trip planners. Android is an advanced operating system with updated tools that allow for easy updates and changes to the system when necessary.
